RICE Score Tool
Rank feature ideas by reach, impact, confidence and effort, on one scale, and see which places in the ranking rest on a guess.
This tool also runs as a stage in a playbook, which takes you through several tools in order:
- Prioritize product features Stage 3 of 5: which ideas give the most for the effort? Start at stage 1
Not following the playbook?
The ideas to rank
One idea per line. Up to 40.
Add ideas
Count reach over the same period
Use the same period for every idea, or the scores can't be compared. A quarter is usual.
Your numbers never leave your browser
Ideas, reach, impact, confidence and effort stay on your computer and in your progress file. To write the diagnosis, only the order of the ideas and which ones rest on a guess are sent to our server. How it works
Score each idea
Four estimates for each idea. The score is reach × impact × confidence ÷ effort.
- R Reach
- Customers it affects in a quarter. For an idea only some customers want, count only them.
- I Impact
- How much it helps each one: 3 massive, 2 high, 1 medium, 0.5 low, 0.25 minimal.
- C Confidence
- 100% when you have data, 80% with some evidence, 50% when it is mostly a guess.
- E Effort
- Person-months for the whole team, design and testing included. 0.5 is two weeks of one person.
The ranking
Highlighted rows rest on a guess (50% confidence). Tick "Test first" for any idea to test before you commit to building it.

Save your progress
Download your progress file to continue from this point any time, on any computer: choose it under "Coming back?" at the start of the tool. Each new file includes everything so far, including the earlier stages when they are connected, so keep the latest one. Your work stays in this browser only until you close it.

About the tool
Why it exists
Compare a small fix for many with a big feature for a few
RICE gives each idea a score from four estimates, so ideas of very different sizes sit on the same scale: reach (how many customers it affects in a set period), impact (how much it helps each one), confidence (how sure you are) and effort (person-months of work).
The confidence score is the one to watch: it tells you which part of the ranking to trust. This tool works on its own, and as stage 3 of our playbook for prioritizing product features, where it ranks the one-dimensional and attractive ideas from the Kano sort. For the method, see our guide to RICE.
The method
How the tool works
The score. Reach × impact × confidence ÷ effort. Impact uses the fixed scale 3, 2, 1, 0.5, 0.25; confidence is 100%, 80% or 50%. Ties go to the idea with less effort.
Guesses marked. Every idea at 50% confidence is highlighted. A test is suggested for a guess that ranks in the top half or has high impact (2 or more); you can tick or untick "Test first" for any idea. In the playbook, an idea waiting on a test starts in Won't (testing first) in stage 4.
One period for all. Reach is counted over the same period for every idea, usually a quarter. If you give the number of customers you have, the tool flags a reach above it.
What leaves your computer. Ideas and numbers stay in your browser and your progress file. To write the diagnosis, the page sends our server only the order of the ideas and which rest on a guess, and the server keeps nothing.
