Balanced Scorecard Tool
Give every objective a measure, a target for this year, the initiative that will move it and one owner, and check the scorecard is balanced.
This tool also runs as a stage in a playbook, which takes you through several tools in order:
- Execute a business strategy Stage 2 of 5: how will you measure progress on each objective? Start at stage 1
Not following the playbook?
Already have objectives the leadership agrees on? The playbook can start here: write them below, in the four perspectives.
The strategy (optional)
In one line: where you will compete and how.
Objectives and their measures
- One or two measures per objective. Prefer one you can already collect over a perfect one you can't.
- A measure nobody updates is worse than none, because it looks like control.
Your notes never leave your browser
Objectives, measures, targets and owners stay on your computer and in your progress file. To write the diagnosis, only counts and gaps are sent to our server, by place in your list. How it works
Set a target, an initiative and an owner
For this year. The initiative is the project that will move the measure.
- Today: where the measure stands now. Never measured? Leave it empty and measure it in the first month.
- Target: a number, so that at the end of the year it is plainly met or missed.
- One owner per measure, a person or a role. A target owned by a group is owned by no one.
The balanced scorecard
Early warning and results
Financial results arrive last. Customer, process and people measures move first, so they warn you while there is still time to act.
Who owns what
Save your progress
Download your progress file to continue from this point any time, on any computer: choose it under "Coming back?" at the start of the tool. Each new file includes everything so far, including the earlier stages when they are connected, so keep the latest one. Your work stays in this browser only until you close it.

Take your results with you
A PDF of the scorecard, the balance between early and late measures, who owns what, and the diagnosis.
About the tool
Why it exists
Know whether the strategy is working before the year-end figures
A balanced scorecard gives every objective a measure, a target, an initiative and an owner, in the same four perspectives as a strategy map: financial, customer, internal process, and learning and growth.
This tool works on its own, and as stage 2 of our playbook for executing a business strategy, where it picks up the objectives from the strategy map of stage 1. For the method, see our guide to the balanced scorecard.
The method
How the tool works
Four things per objective. A measure, a target for this year, the initiative (the project that will move the measure) and one owner. One or two measures per objective.
Balance. Financial results arrive last. Customer, process and people measures move first, so the tool counts how many early measures sit under the financial ones, and warns when everything measured is money.
Checks on each row. A target with no number, an owner that is a group, a measure you can't collect yet, no starting value, and owners carrying more than four objectives.
What leaves your computer. Objectives, measures, targets and owners stay in your browser and your progress file. To write the diagnosis, the page sends our server only counts and gaps, by place in your lists, and the server keeps nothing.
